What is a Charlotte phone number?

Two area codes, one Queen City. We'll help you pick.

A Charlotte phone number starts with 704 or 980. Both cover the same 13 counties around the city, from Uptown out to Concord, Gastonia, and Mooresville. When one pops up on caller ID, people see a neighbor, not a stranger. That's often all it takes to get the call answered.

You don't need a Charlotte office to get one, either. Choose your area code and we'll set it up to ring your cell, your desk, or your whole team. Wondering how local numbers work? We'll explain it in plain English, then handle the setup for you.

Know your codes

Charlotte area codes, explained.

Charlotte has two area codes, and they ring the exact same map. Here's the short story behind each, plus a couple of neighbors worth knowing. (Feel free to skip ahead. We're happy to just find you a great number.)

704

Since 1947

704: the original

One of the country's very first area codes. It once covered all of North Carolina. Splits in 1954 and 1998 trimmed it down until it belonged to Charlotte and its neighbors.

980

Since 2000

980: the overlay

When 704 started running low, 980 was laid right on top of it instead of splitting the map again. It was North Carolina's first overlay, and it's every bit as Charlotte as 704.

803

SC side

803 & 839: across the state line

Plenty of the Charlotte metro lives in South Carolina. Rock Hill, Fort Mill, and the rest of York and Lancaster counties use 803 and its newer overlay, 839. We can set those up too.

Since 2001

Always 10 digits

Because two codes share one map, every local call in Charlotte uses all 10 digits. That means a 980 number is just as easy for customers to dial as a 704.

Room to grow

Plenty of numbers left

The folks who manage U.S. phone numbers expect 704 and 980 to last until about 2036. No surprise new area code is on the way, so the number you pick today stays right at home.

Which one should you pick?

Honestly? Either one says "Charlotte" on caller ID. 704 has been around the longest, so it's the code most locals picture. 980 works exactly the same way.

Still torn? Give us a call at (913)-599-6500 and we'll help you pick the perfect number for your business.

Together, 704 and 980 cover Charlotte and its neighbors: Uptown, SouthPark, Ballantyne, NoDa, Plaza Midwood, Dilworth, Concord, Gastonia, Huntersville, Matthews, Mooresville, Cornelius, Davidson, Kannapolis, Mint Hill, Indian Trail, Monroe, Waxhaw, Pineville, Belmont, Statesville, Salisbury, and beyond. If your customers are anywhere around the Queen City, these codes fit.

Why it helps

Sound local, win more calls, keep your evenings.

A Charlotte number does more than ring. It tells nearly 3 million neighbors you're local, and it keeps work calls off your personal phone.

Build instant trust in Charlotte

Callers see a 704 or 980 and think "neighbor," not "telemarketer." That split second of trust is often what gets you the call, before you've said a word.

More answered calls and callbacks

Most folks let strange out-of-state numbers go to voicemail. A familiar Charlotte code gets picked up, and your missed calls actually get returned.

Serve Charlotte from anywhere

Working out of Rock Hill? Raleigh? Richmond? Doesn't matter. Your 704 number rings wherever you are, so you can win Queen City customers without a Queen City office.

Keep your cell number private

Quit handing out your personal cell. Give customers a real Charlotte business line instead, and get your dinners, weekends, and peace of mind back.

Bring your number, or pick a new one

Customers already know your 704 number? Bring it with you. It stays yours. Starting fresh? We'll help you find a great one. Either way, we handle the move.

A whole phone system, not just digits

Your Charlotte number comes with professional greetings, phone menus, call screening, and voicemail-to-text. One local line, and your whole answering system is handled.

Where is area code 704? Where is area code 980?
Both cover Charlotte and the counties around it, including Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Union, Iredell, Rowan, and Lincoln. 704 came first, back in 1947. 980 was added on top of it in 2000, when Charlotte needed more numbers.

Do I need a Charlotte address to get a Charlotte number?
Nope. Your business can be anywhere. Pick the Charlotte area code you want, and we'll set it up to ring wherever you take calls, whether that's SouthPark, Spartanburg, or your spare bedroom.
Can I keep my current Charlotte number?
Absolutely. If customers already know your number, bring it along and we'll handle the move for you. Usually all we need is a recent bill from your current provider. The number stays yours. Would rather start fresh? Pick a new one and we'll get it set up.
Will calls to my Charlotte number still reach my cell?
Yes. Calls can ring your cell, your office, or a whole team, however you like. Your personal number stays private the whole time, and you can change where calls go with one quick call to us.
What does a Charlotte phone number cost?

Your Charlotte number is included with every plan, starting at $20 a month. There are no setup fees and no contracts, and you can try any plan for 14 days for just $1.

Can I text customers from my Charlotte number?

Yes. Business texting is available on our Solo Operator and Team plans for $5 a month per 1,000 messages. Customers can text the same Charlotte number they call, and we take care of the registration paperwork for you.

Should I get a local Charlotte number or a toll-free number?

A local number (like 704 or 980) feels close to home and builds trust around Charlotte. A toll-free number (like 800 or 888) feels bigger and more national. Lots of businesses use both, and we're happy to help you figure out what fits.
