What is a San Diego phone number?

Four area codes, one sunny county. We'll find your fit.

A San Diego phone number starts with 619 or 858 in the city, or 760 and 442 up in North County. When one shows up on caller ID, locals see a neighbor, not a robocall. That little bit of trust is often what gets the phone picked up.

And you don't need a San Diego storefront to have one. Pick the area code you want, and we'll set it up to ring your cell, your desk, or your whole team. Curious how local numbers work? We'll walk you through it, then do the setup for you.

Know your codes

San Diego area codes, explained.

San Diego County has four area codes. Two cover the city, and two cover North County. Here's the quick backstory on each. (Not a trivia fan? No problem. We're happy to just find you a great number.)

619

Since 1982

619: the original

San Diego's first code of its own, split off from 714 in 1982. It covers downtown, the South Bay, and East County, and it's the code Reggie Bush wore on his eye black to rep his hometown.

858

Since 1999

858: the northern city

Split from 619 in 1999 for La Jolla, Del Mar, Poway, and Rancho Bernardo. Since 2018 it shares the whole map with 619, so a new 858 number works anywhere in the city.

760

Since 1997

760: North County and beyond

Covers Carlsbad, Oceanside, Escondido, and Encinitas, then keeps going all the way out to the desert. It's the biggest area code region in California.

442

Since 2009

442: the overlay

Added on top of 760 when North County needed more numbers, so nobody had to change theirs. A 442 number covers the same ground as 760 and is just as local.

Room to grow

No new code on the way

San Diego isn't expected to need another area code for at least a decade. The number you pick today will feel right at home for years to come.

Which one should you pick?

If your customers are in the city, go with 619 or 858. 619 is the one most people picture when they think "San Diego." Serving Carlsbad or Escondido? A 760 or 442 number fits right in.

Still not sure? Give us a call at (913)-599-6500 and we'll help you pick the perfect number for your business.

Together, San Diego's area codes cover the whole county: Downtown, the Gaslamp, North Park, La Jolla, Del Mar, Coronado, Chula Vista, National City, Imperial Beach, El Cajon, La Mesa, Santee, Lemon Grove, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Mira Mesa, Rancho Santa Fe, Carlsbad, Oceanside, Encinitas, Escondido, Vista, San Marcos, Fallbrook, Ramona, and beyond. Wherever your customers are, from the border to North County, one of these codes fits.

Why it helps

Look local, get more calls, keep your weekends.

A San Diego number does more than ring. It tells 3.3 million neighbors you're local, and it keeps your business line off your personal phone.

Build instant trust in San Diego

Callers see a 619 or 858 and think "local business," not "spam call." That quick flash of trust is often what wins the call, before you've said hello.

More answered calls and callbacks

Out-of-area numbers get sent straight to voicemail. A San Diego code looks familiar, so more people pick up and call you back.

Serve San Diego from anywhere

Working from Temecula? Tucson? Tacoma? Doesn't matter. Your San Diego number rings wherever you are, so you can win local customers without a local lease.

Greet callers in English or Spanish

San Diego speaks more than one language. We'll professionally record your greeting in English, Spanish, or both, so every caller feels welcome.

Keep your cell number private

Stop giving out your personal cell. Hand customers a real San Diego business line, and take back your evenings, your weekends, and your beach days.

A whole phone system, not just digits

Your San Diego number plugs right into professional greetings, phone menus, call screening, and voicemail-to-text. One local line runs your whole answering system.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What area code is San Diego?
The city of San Diego uses 619 and 858. North County cities like Carlsbad, Oceanside, and Escondido use 760 and 442. Any of the four reads as a local San Diego County number.
What area code is 619? What area code is 858?
619 covers downtown San Diego, the South Bay (like Chula Vista and National City), and East County (like El Cajon, La Mesa, and Santee). 858 covers the northern part of the city, including La Jolla, Del Mar, Poway, and Rancho Bernardo. Since 2018 the two share one map, so a new number in either code works citywide.
Can I choose between a 619, 858, 760, or 442 number?
Yes. Tell us which San Diego area code you want, and we'll find you a great number in it. Have a specific number or pattern in mind? Ask us, and we'll see what's available.
Do I need a San Diego address to get a San Diego number?
Nope. Your business can be anywhere. Pick the San Diego area code you want, and we'll set it up to ring wherever you take calls, whether that's the Gaslamp, Glendale, or your garage office.
Can I use my current San Diego number?
Absolutely. If your customers already know your number, bring it over and we'll handle the move for you. Or, if you'd rather start fresh, pick a new one and we'll get it set up. Your call.
Do I own my San Diego phone number, or does AccessDirect?
You do. It's your business number, and if you ever decide to leave, you can take it with you. No hostage situations here.
Can I forward my San Diego number to my cell phone?
Yes. Calls can ring your cell, your office, or a whole team, however you like. Your personal number stays private the whole time, and you can change where calls go with one quick call to us.
How fast can I be up and running?
Order online and we'll call you within one business day to pick your number, set everything up, and record your greetings. Most businesses are taking calls on their new San Diego number within a day or two. No software to learn, no headaches.
Should I get a local San Diego number or a toll-free number?

A local number (like 619 or 858) feels close to home and builds trust around San Diego. A toll-free number (like 800 or 888) feels bigger and more national. Many businesses use both, and we're happy to help you decide what fits.
